Illuminating flare used in rescue

Aran Islands RNLI rescued three people in a dinghy

Aran Islands RNLI saw a flare and rescued three people from a dinghy, which was taking on water in the Atlantic.

Following a 999 call, Aran Islands RNLI launched its all-weather lifeboat one night in July. It searched for the fibreglass dinghy five miles northeast of Inis Mór.

The dinghy crew fired a flare and the crew saw it and carried out the rescue.

They pumped water from the dinghy and towed it to Ros an Mhíl harbour with Costello Bay Coast Guard alongside. At the harbour, Costello Bay Coast Guard towed the dinghy to a nearby slipway.

Tommy Dirrane, Aran Islands RNLI Coxswain says, “Time is of the essence in a situation where a boat is taking on water

“This was a good response time for our volunteer crew and we were able to get to the men and the vessel quickly with the help of the illumination of their flare and a flashlight they were carrying.

“We would like to thank our colleagues in Costelloe Bay Coast Guard for their cooperation and working with us to bring the three back to safety.”
