Jet-skier rescued after red flare activated

The Spirit of Dawn who came to the rescue of the jet-skier

A charter vessel found and rescued a jet-skier in the water in South Africa after seeing a red flare.

Sea Rescue South Africa (NSRI) received a call from a Johannesburg woman one morning in September, saying her husband was in difficulty after his jet-ski sank at Protea Banks, off Shelly Beach.

NSRI Shelly Beach crew was alerted and the sea rescue craft Spirit of Dawn was launched, says NSRI Shelly Beach duty controller, Jean Pierre Thaumuller.

The crew on the local charter vessel Blue Diamond saw the jet-skier’s flare and then spotted him. They took the uninjured jet-skier aboard and towed the jet-ski.

The NSRI sea rescue craft met them at sea and the man and jet-ski were transferred.

NSRI commend the skipper and crew of Blue Diamond for their assistance. The photo is a stock picture from the NSRI.
