Boaters should be aware of marine distress signals and have them on board, advises a US Coast Guard.
Operations Petty Officer and 1st Lieutenant Brian Rodrigues from the Saginaw River U.S. Coast Guard Station in Bay County, Michigan, says life jackets, fire extinguishers and flares are all vital safety kit.
In 2022, there were 636 boating fatalities, 75 of which were fatal incidents where the victims drowned. Of those, 85% were not wearing a life jacket.
