Watertight flare box key part of Bermuda rescue

North Rock

A watertight flare box enabled two men to be rescued from rough seas in Bermuda after their fishing boat sank.

The 34-foot Sea Scorpion was struck by a rogue wave and quickly sank one day in December 2023.

They tried to swim to North Rock but were fortunate that the watertight flare box came to the surface after the vessel went down and the flares stayed dry.

The Royal Bermuda Regiment Coastguard vessel Rescue 1 set out from Boaz Island in Sandys and spotted a handheld flare at the North Rock small boat channel. It was also seen from the Bermuda Maritime Operations headquarters at Fort George in St George’s.

The men were located and brought safely to shore at Mills Creek in Pembroke.
